Foundation for horticulture

In the early 1980s, the government built what is now known as the Kerikeri Irrigation Scheme to support the Northland town’s growing horticulture industry. The 340-Member co-operative offers both commercial and non-commercial water supply sourced from the Manuwai and Waingaro reservoirs.

Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation Ltd (ALIL)

Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation Ltd (ALIL) is a farmer-owned co-operative, which receives its allocation of water from Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd. The co-operative currently delivers water through a network of races and pressurised pipe system to its 244 shareholder members, who collectively farm close to 30,000 hectares west and north of Ashburton.

Co-operation amongst co-operatives: the BCI story

Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Limited (BCI) was formed as a farmer owned co-operative company in 1998 and, in 2001, was granted consent to take 17 cumecs of water from the Rakaia River and irrigate 40,000 ha in Mid Canterbury.
