NZPM was formed in 1964 by a group of master plumbers led by Ido De Bernardo to establish a merchant chain throughout New Zealand. The goals of this co-operative chain were to improve the profitability and quality of service and products to its plumber shareholders.
NZPM GROUP LIMITED IS A LIMITED LIABILITY CO-OPERATIVE COMPANY OWNED BY ITS CUSTOMER SHAREHOLDERS.
Calling themselves NZ Plumbers’ Merchants Society (NZPMS), they purchased a small plumbing merchant/importer and NZPM was on its way.
Over half a century later, NZPM Group Ltd remains a limited liability co-operative company owned by its customer shareholders who now comprise plumbers, gasfitters, drainlayers, irrigation companies, civil contractors and certain classes of builders.
General Manager Rob Kidd, pictured, says NZPM has been built on strong co-operative values.
“This is reflected in the way we do business, the way we care for our people, our environment and our communities,” he says.

“With group turnover of over $200 million, NZPM’s focus is firmly on the dual goals of growing our members’ and customers’ businesses and improving the financial and operating performance of the group.”
NZPM’s main operating subsidiaries are Plumbing World Limited and Metrix Imports Limited. Through these companies, NZPM imports, distributes, wholesales and retails plumbing, drainlaying and gas-related products.
The co-operative has achieved significant growth and evolution since 1964 while Plumbing World is a leading brand within the NZ building industry with 46 stores nationally.
In 2015, NZPM sold its refrigeration importing and wholesaling business to increase focus on the core plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying segments.
NZPM Group, and its subsidiary Metrix are headquartered in Auckland, while Plumbing World has a Palmerston North Support Office and the following store locations nationwide.
“We opened the new East Tamaki (in Auckland) branch during March, our new branch at Hornby in Christchurch in April and we have begun work on our new Invercargill branch which is scheduled to open later in the year.”
Cooperative Business NZ Chief Executive Craig Presland praised the co-operative’s enduring commitment and service over the past 50 plus years towards its shareholders and customers.
“The purpose of NZPM is succinctly described by its mission statement: To contribute to our members’ and customers’ business success by representing their interests and delivering performance excellence,” says Craig.
“NZPM has a very experienced management team and Board who are keen to collaborate across our Cooperative Business NZ Members including within the areas of supply agreements, leveraging on the economies of scale in order to lower costs, and knowledge sharing.
“NZPM has played a very significant part within NZ’s residential and commercial building industry for over half a century now. We are delighted to have NZPM return to us as a Member while this adds to the presence of co-operatives from the NZ building and construction sector across our membership,” he says.
