Since 1987, Foodfirst has been more than just a food distributor, it has been a cornerstone of New Zealand’s communities. What started as a shared vision between nine passionate entrepreneurs in Whangārei has grown into a national network of over 200 trusted suppliers, 23 locally owned distribution sites, and a fleet of 260+ temperature-controlled vehicles serving regions from top to bottom.
At the heart of Foodfirst is a commitment to supporting local communities. Foodfirst is not a one size fits all distributor; it’s a cooperative that places local connection and innovation above all else. Each member of Foodfirst is not just a business owner but a vital part of the local fabric, building strong relationships with customers and understanding their unique needs. This is what makes Foodfirst stand out: we don’t just serve communities; we are part of them.

Rob Chemaly, Executive Chair of Foodfirst, reflects, “Our cooperative model allows us to remain agile and customer focused. The real strength of Foodfirst lies in the personal connections our members have within their communities. These are not just business transactions; they’re partnerships built on trust and a shared vision of quality, service, and sustainability.”

Foodfirst’s impact goes beyond its services. We champion the growth of local economies by empowering regional farmers, manufacturers, and suppliers. With each product we distribute, we are not just delivering goods, we’re supporting the backbone of New Zealand’s food industry and strengthening our local communities.
“Our success is a direct result of our members’ commitment to their communities,” Rob continues. “We understand the importance of building trust. Our members are actively involved in the lives of those they serve, and they are driven by a genuine desire to make their local communities stronger. This sense of responsibility and care is what fuels our cooperative, and it’s what makes Foodfirst special.”
