Exploring world-leading agricultural innovation at LIC
Join a small group of Cooperative Business NZ members for an exclusive visit to Livestock Improvement Corporation’s (LIC) Innovation Farm in the Waikato, home to some of the most advanced agricultural research in the world. Hosted by LIC scientists, this visit offers a rare opportunity to experience firsthand how New Zealand’s cooperative sector is driving innovation that has global impact.
At the heart of the visit is a tour of LIC’s new methane research barn, purpose-built to help farmers reduce on-farm emissions while maintaining productivity. This state-of-the-art facility opened in October 2025 and enables scientists to measure methane output with unprecedented precision, accelerating the development of low-emission breeding and feeding strategies. It’s a true demonstration of how New Zealand is contributing to global climate goals through practical, science-led solutions, and how cooperative investment in R&D delivers value far beyond the farm gate.
Participants will also learn about LIC’s pioneering work on heat-tolerant cattle genetics. Designed to support dairy farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, this research is helping to build resilience to rising global temperatures and ensure food security in regions already facing climate stress. It demonstrates the uniquely cooperative ethos of sharing innovation across borders for the common good, in this case improving productivity, reducing emissions, and building a more resilient global food system.
