International Year of Cooperatives 2025

[ Cooperatives Build a Better World ]

2025 was the second United Nations-designated International Year of Cooperatives

2025 was a global celebration and campaign to recognise, elevate and mainstream the cooperative business model as a critical driver of sustainable development, community resilience and inclusive economic growth. The year built on the first IYC in 2012, reaffirming the cooperative movement’s vital role in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and delivering shared prosperity.

A global year of impact

The United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives under the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better World”. This global initiative encouraged governments, institutions, cooperatives and civil society to highlight the social, economic and environmental contributions of cooperatives around the world to sustainable development, poverty reduction, employment creation and inclusive growth.

The four core objectives of IYC2025 were to:

  1. Raise public awareness of the impact and relevance of cooperatives.

  2. Promote growth and development of cooperative enterprises globally.

  3. Advocate for supportive legal and policy frameworks that enable cooperative success.

  4. Inspire leadership and engage youth in the cooperative movement.

[ Member events and networking ]

Throughout IYC2025 we brought together the co-op and mutual sector through a series of educational and networking events - from panel discussions in up and down the country to a behind-the-scenes member site visit and kicking off our Public Affairs Forum group for members.

Our major workstream for the year was updating the Cooperative Economy Report 2025, including first-ever analysis of Companies Office data proving that co-ops and mutuals last almost five times longer than companies. The report was launched at an industry event at Parliament.

[ Young Director Initiative ]

As New Zealand’s peak body for co-ops and mutuals, we understand the importance of developing future directors.

One of our IYC2025 initiatives was to offer a 12-month Board Observer role to the winner of each Emerging Leader of the Year Award, commencing in 2025. Our inaugural Board Observer was Ashleigh Buchanan, Southern Cross Health Society and 2024 Emerging Leader of the Year.

Ashleigh joined the Cooperative Business NZ board for the 2025 calendar year.

We created a launch video to sit alongside the Cooperative Economy Report 2025 showcasing the epic story of size, scale and impact of New Zealand cooperatives and mutuals.

What it means going forward

IYC2025 brought unprecedented visibility to cooperative enterprises and reinforced the case for supportive ecosystems, from enabling legislation to financial inclusion, that allow cooperative and mutual businesses to thrive. The outcomes of the year provide a foundation for renewed national strategies, research collaboration, and advocacy, with momentum now flowing into the next decade of cooperative development.

The key global deliverables and legacy from IYC2025 include three major reports: World Cooperative Monitor 2025 Report; CM50 Contract for a New Global Economy Report and the UN Cooperatives in Social Development Report.
