Board Observer Role for Emerging Leader of the Year Winner
Strong governance is one of the defining strengths of successful cooperatives and mutuals. If we want our sector to thrive for the next 50 years, we must actively build the next generation of capable, values-driven directors.
That is why the Emerging Leader of the Year Award goes beyond recognition. Each year, Full, Provisional and Corporate Associate Members are eligible to nominate an outstanding emerging leader (aged 35 and under) for the Emerging Leader of the Year Award. The award recognises individuals who are making a meaningful impact within their organisation, through innovation, collaboration, co-operation, or driving best practice.
From 2024, the award has included a significant development opportunity, the winner is invited to join the Cooperative Business NZ Board as a Board Observer for the following calendar year.
As a Board Observer, the recipient gains:
First-hand exposure to governance in practice
Insight into sector-wide strategic issues
Experience observing board processes, decision-making and fiduciary responsibilities
Direct connection with experienced cooperative directors
Expanded networks across the cooperative and mutual ecosystem
This is a practical investment in governance succession and a tangible expression of Principle 5: Education, Training and Information.
The 2024 Emerging Leader of the Year winner, Ashleigh Buchanan, Operations Manager People Capabilities at Southern Cross Health Society, served as Board Observer in 2025. Our 2025 winner Isabel Schmahl joins the Board for 2026, continuing this growing leadership pathway.
By linking recognition with real governance experience, we are strengthening not just individual careers, but the long-term capability of the cooperative movement in New Zealand.
