Co-op constitution starter kit

Starting a cooperative involves important constitutional decisions that shape governance, capital structure and member rights for years to come. For new and emerging co-ops, this stage can feel complex, time consuming and costly.

To support Provisional Members, we provide a standard cooperative constitution template and a practical guidance memorandum explaining how to use it. Developed with the support of Corporate Associate Member Anderson Lloyd, these resources are designed specifically for cooperatives registering under the Co-operative Companies Act 1996.

The Starter Kit helps you:

  • Understand the core clauses required in a cooperative constitution

  • Identify key governance and capital decisions early

  • Reduce time spent drafting from scratch

  • Lower professional advisory costs by entering discussions better prepared

  • Move forward with clarity and confidence

Used alongside the Co-op Constitution Delver, the template and memorandum provide both precedent and structure. Together they give emerging cooperatives a practical pathway from concept to formal registration.

This benefit reflects Principle 5 Education, Training and Information by making cooperative knowledge accessible at the earliest stage of formation.

Built for Provisional Members, also available to Full Members.
